This solo piece was made in collaboration with artist Eric Bissell during of a residency at the Foundry Nights Gallery Space. Eric says about the work: “Landing at Al Asad Airbase, Iraq – Desert Airfield Al Anbar Province uses landscape, specifically the desert environment, to connect two distant places. Working with Sarah Ashkin’s memories of growing up in the Southwest, and a YouTube video of landing at the second largest US airbase in the Iraq desert, the piece is the start of a conversation about distance and familiarity, place and difference. Is it possible to use landscape as a way to develop empathy for one another while still respecting the diversity of separate experiences?”
