Landing at Al Asad Airbase, Iraq- Desert Airfield Al Anbar Province, 2013
The Foundry Nights Gallery Space, Oakland, CA
Temescal Arts Center, Oakland, CA

This solo piece was made in collaboration with artist Eric Bissell during of a residency at the Foundry Nights Gallery Space. Eric says about the work: “Landing at Al Asad Airbase, Iraq – Desert Airfield Al Anbar Province uses landscape, specifically the desert environment, to connect two distant places. Working with Sarah Ashkin’s memories of growing up in the Southwest, and a YouTube video of landing at the second largest US airbase in the Iraq desert, the piece is the start of a conversation about distance and familiarity, place and difference. Is it possible to use landscape as a way to develop empathy for one another while still respecting the diversity of separate experiences?”

The piece was remounted at the EAST COAST BOUND show presented by GROUND SERIES.
